Wraith

Wraiths were probably originally guardian angels from Iceland. Wraith often means an apparition of a person that is seen right before or after he dies.

In Lord of the Rings, wraiths are mortals who have been forced to walk the earth after death for so long that no more than their soul remains. These wraiths are also called Nazgul or ring-wraiths. They are incredibly powerful and nearly invincible. They were made immortal by wearing magic rings, but the immorality was superficial and they have become undead. Even though they only had a soul, they seemed to have some material existence or force as they could battle with swords and disguise themselves as men by wearing black cloaks.

In Dungeons and Dragons, wraiths are evil spirits of once powerful people whose touch can drain health and experience from people (making wizards forget how to cast spells and warriors how to fight well). They appear as black clouds shaped as the upper torso of a person with glowing red eyes. Dying by the touch of a wraith turns victims into wraiths, and they are controlled by the wraith that killed them. These wraiths loose their powers by sunlight.
