Skeleton

In Hindu folklore animated skeletons were often actually possessed by a spirit, called a preta. Extremely greedy people are often believed to become a pretas once they die. There are thirty-six variations of pretas, and only some of which can animate skeletons. Pretas tend to be in cemeteries. They are tall, eat refuse, and are unable to eat or drink satisfactorily; they are condemned to starve.

Several pretas are servants of Yama (god of the underword) and live in hell where it is eternally night, intensely cold, and absolutely silent. Some of them are still allowed to walk the earth where they are visible only at night, and occasionally pretend to be a person.

Hindu Bodhisattvas (certain religious leaders) take pride in helping pretas by offering food. They see pretas with pity, as they are afflicted souls condemned for eternity.

In the movie Jason and the Argonauts, the hero faced an army of skeletons created from a few bones by a powerful magician.

In Dungeons and Dragons, skeletons are undead warriors animated by a spell cast by a magician or priest called "animate dead." The animate dead spell is very limited, so skeletons are not particularly strong. Skeletons are basically soulless, and have very little thought. They only obey very simple commands, and are unorganized in battle.
